NØLO Recipe: La Batang-NA
Mar 21, 2025
This is a VERY delicious drink we didn't invent but that we make aaaaaallllllll the time and we know we're doing a very good job. Trust us, this one belongs in your booze-free bag of tricks. Clocking in at three easy ingredients, you know we love keeping it deliciously simple.
The History
This cocktail has been exciting since 1961. The original Batanga cocktail recipe is credited to Don Javier Delgado, owner of La Capilla in Tequila, Mexico. The word batanga is slang for "thick in the middle" and it's said the muse for this drink was just that.
ANYHOO. At La Capilla, the drink is stirred with the long, wood-handled knife used to cut the limes, giving your bar game a bit of danger, and your barkeep story arsenal some historic pop.
Make It
- Juice of 1/2 lime (.5 oz)
1.5 oz Free Spirits The Spirit of Tequila (or your favorite non-alcoholic tequila) - 3 - 4 oz Mexican Coke
- Salt
< 0.5% ABV | Rim your tall glass with coarse salt, and squeeze 1/2 a lime and a pinch of salt into the glass. Add ice and 1.5 oz. Free Spirits The Spirit of Tequila and 3 - 4 oz Mexican Coke.
Give it a stir (remember, it's more authentic if you do this step with your bar knife for this drink). Garnish with lime. Sip and savor.
